With 3 Weeks until Election Day, NRDC Action Votes Declares Oct 21- 25th Safe Drinking Water Is on the Ballot Week

WASHINGTON (Oct. 17, 2024) – Building on the monumental Biden-Harris announcement initiating a massive overhaul of national drinking water infrastructure, NRDC Action Votes is declaring the week of October 21st, “Safe Drinking Water Is on the Ballot Week.” Throughout the week, NRDC Action Votes will educate voters in key swing states in Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, and Texas about how their vote could mean the difference between clean, safe drinking water or continued risk of lead contamination to children.

“Clean, safe drinking water is on the ballot in every federal race, and we will be over $,1000,000 in Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas to make sure voters know it,” said NRDC Action Votes Jocelyn Steinberg. “There is no safe level of lead. Clean, safe drinking water should be a given, but there are actually candidates out there who have opposed replacing lead pipes, putting their whole communities and future generations at risk. Voters need to know who is on their side and who would allow lead contaminated water to poison our most vulnerable - pregnant women, infants and children.”

More than nine million homes receive drinking water through a lead pipe. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law allocated $15 billion for lead pipe removal, but former President Donald Trump, Republican Candidate Paul Junge, Republican Congressman Brandon Williams, Pennsylvania Senate Candidate Dave McCormick and Senator Ted Cruz are on the record against this bill and the critical funding to remove lead pipes that it provides.

For more information on the rule, go here. These new rules from the EPA ensure states and cities follow through and get those toxic pipes out of the ground. The EPA agreed to set these new lead standards after the Natural Resources Defense Council and its partners sued over the inadequacy of rules the agency put in place in 2020, under President Donald Trump.
