NRDC Action Votes congratulates Jamie Harrison on his historic campaign for the Senate in South Carolina. The campaign, while falling short in the end, demonstrated that candidates who support dirty fossil fuels are on the defensive nationwide, even in conservative states like South Carolina.
NRDC Action Votes ran $500,000 in television ads and direct mail in South Carolina attacking Sen. Lindsey Graham for his flip-flopping on offshore drilling. Graham had supported offshore exploration before tacking away from the oil industry during the heat of the campaign.
“Jamie Harrison made the people on South Carolina central to his campaign as he talked about environmental justice,” said Jossie Steinberg, Director of NRDC Action Votes. “He knows that people must come before polluters. We are very thankful for his hard work, and that of his campaign. His historic candidacy will leave an enduring mark in the state and across the region.”
NRDC Action Votes, which launched just this year, is an independent political action committee that works to promote the goals of the NRDC Action Fund, including working for protection of wild lands, healthy air and water, and addressing climate change.
