NRDC Action Votes Casts “American Psycho 3”: Back to Cancún” with Ted Cruz

WASHINGTON - NRDC Action Votes today announced a new campaign to hold U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) accountable for his decision to vacation in Cancún while millions of Texans endured the catastrophic power grid failure in February 2021. In honor of the announcement that there will be an “American Psycho” sequel, NRDC Action Votes is releasing an ad that features Ted Cruz in the starring role.

“It’s telling that the most high profile moment of Ted Cruz’s Senate career is when he abandoned Texas. When the power grid failed, leaving 4 million people and businesses struggling, Ted Cruz could not run away fast enough,” Jocelyn Steinberg, Director of NRDC Action Votes said. “It’s a profile in selfish cowardice. Two hundred and forty people lost their lives. But Ted Cruz took a look at the crisis and saw it as an opportunity… for a vacation. Now it’s time to hold Ted Cruz accountable.”

The NRDC Action Votes ad artfully satirizes scenes from “American Psycho” by drawing on Cruz’s infamous apathy during his real-life decisions during the 2021 power grid failure. NRDC Action Votes’ campaign targeting Cruz will warn Texas voters about why true leadership is needed in Washington and how they deserve better than Cruz.

NRDC Action Votes also launched a Simpsons satirized meme of Cruz disappearing into the bushes to emphasize this notorious disappearing act when Texans needed him most and an ad called “Whiteboard” that mimics a PR strategy session mocking Cruz for trying to blame running away from the crisis on his family.

The Cruz Psycho ad will begin airing statewide this week across multiple streaming platforms such as hulu, peacock, youtubeTV and others and can be viewed here

Cancún Psycho

There is an idea of Ted Cruz, some kind of abstraction, but there is no real me.

You can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are comparable —

That is, until the power grid collapses and I flee to Cancún.

While families huddle together freezing in the cold,

I sip margaritas under the sun.

You might look at me and think we're the same,

But behind the smile,

the staged apologies,

the photos of me boarding a flight back to Texas:

I simply am not there.
